Week One Reflection

Overall, this week has been a bit of a shock as I didn't really prepare myself for the amount of work we would have in this second semester. However, I have printed all the briefs off and started a plan for the work that needs to be tackled first and then a day plan for the work load so I don't become overwhelmed and want to quit.

I love this brief though we have such a variety of things to choose from and become more indipented in what we do and how we achieve our personal goals without the constant help from our tutors. I know though that if I find it tough I can just go talk to them. The thing that I find the hardest is not the work, as I enjoy the challenge and proving my anxiety wrong, but being away from home, I'm not the best when I am down here as I don't enjoy where I am living,  so I constantly want to go back home which makes a strain on my money and doing my work.

However, I will get over this and put what needs to be done first. Priorities Sophie, Priorities!

Right so my weekly plan is below, the first thing that I find the most difficulty in is the Contextual Studies brief, as my dyslexia really sends me two steps backwards, and also it is the first brief that is in first on the 4th March. So that is going to be my main thing to concentrate on. Looking into the brand for this brief and getting my ideas and research down will be fine as when we were given the list of brands I now know which I want to do and I already have some ideas down.

I know I can do this I just have to get my head in the right place, stop being lazy, stop procrastinating and get this done, as when I finish uni I was promised a Pug Puppy by my fiancé. So I need and will get a first as I need to do this not only for the Pug Puppy, but for myself to know that I can do this!

Initial Mood boards

With my initial Mood Boards I wanted to have the feel of natural materials, colours and shapes. Staying in line with my idea of texture, but with the use of different mediums.

The inspiration

In the images below you can see the use or paper and that tea stained look and very natural colours. With the hair Im thinking of making a wig out of paper or flowers or found objects. I did want to make a wig from scratch but I really doubt I can make one in that amount of time and get all the shoots done! So with these ideas in mind I will be looking for inspiration, colours, fashion, art etc with these references and through my development see where my idea changes and what it turns into!

I think all these looks not only represent my own style of photography and makeup looks but also reflect Illamasqua as a brand which is what I need to be doing, but I think my taste is very much similar to theirs so make my life a lot easier!

My Initial Ideas

Now I have my chosen brand and looked into the products, market and personal presentation they have in their collections, I want to look into creating a new collection for them. I have thought of a couple of products that I will include in the advertising, like the Powder Blusher, Katie.

I am thinking of going down the theatrical route, and creating a look that looks like a painting, wig, clothing, makeup. The whole lot. I want to convoy the feel of texture, show the raw brush strokes, in a 1770 style. My Main inspiration for this was of course the eccentric, Marie Antoinette. I want to incorporate her elaborate hair do's into wigs and have this as the running link through my editorial, advertisement and catwalk looks.

Why do I want to do this? I want to create another world, as Illamasqua always do. Mixing make-up with period paintings, and creating that thick texture that makes you want to touch it to see what it feels like.

With the editorial I want to create a party of some sort, girls gigging, eating cake and drinking tea, but captured as if a painting from the late 1700's. With warm pastel colours for the day look, covaying the feeling of happiness with friends and food! With the wigs I want to make it so it reflects that it is summer with butterflys an birds int he hair.

With the night look I was think more along the line of sorrow, sadness, with the use of deeper plum colours, for a more sinister feel, and maybe use of shadows over the face. With the wigs in he night look, I want to maybe add bugs into the hair so subcontionsly you think darker as well as the image itself.

My chosen brand

With my chosen brand I will be looking into every aspect of their company, their products, selling techniques and their advertising, editorial and catwalk looks.

We have been given the 5 p's to look into, Product, Promotion, Presentation, Packaging and Price Point. This will help me in my designs and the outcome of my final project.

Below is my presentation that I discussed with my class, its shows the company as a whole and the ideas that I have formed from it.

Overall, my theme is going to be texture and finding the inner royalty within. My main inspiration is Marie Antoinette the era, the painting style and the colours. So the next thing I will do is start to experiment and look further into late 1700's paintings and the texture I wish to achieve on the skin.

The Brands

The BRANDS

In this project we where given a list of brands to choose from to create our ideas for Editorial, Advertisement and Catwalk look. Below are two of the brands from the list that I thought would, not only be my style but help push the boundaries with makeup and present them in a different light, but still sticking to their style also.

ILLAMASQUA

So my first option is Illamasqua, they are a British beauty brand that has taken the world by storm, by telling people to wear their make-up loud and proud. Illamasqua have a unique way of presenting their brand in a art deco style and advertisement in a theatrical and 'out of this world' manner.

"Edgy new British make-up company that is theatrical, playful and bold with it"
http://www.theguardian.com/fashion/fashion-blog/2011/nov/28/brief-history-of-illamasqua

"I'm a bit of a punk rocker at heart and I felt like there needed to be a new brand to stir up the market. I'm a brand builder and my proximity to make-up more through youth culture. In the very early days when I sat there with a blank piece of paper thinking about Illamasqua, I always remember writing that this brand had to give women the permission to wear make-up loud, proud and bolder than they ever have done. I certainly came into the make-up sector with the intent to revitalise it and take artistry to the next level. For my role, I never had any intention to direct a look, but rather inspire it." To me I think this brand captures the attention from the public to the professionals, due to its unconventional looks and its beautiful and highly pigmented colours. Their advertisements are always imaginative and evoke the passion from the everyday person to students and to professional make-up artists.  To me, this is a key quality.

Looking at just an handful of their collections makes you feel like you are in another world and start your creativity flowing.  I think with each advert  or product they aim to grasp the attention of the public and professionals to be drawn into this alternate universe and therefore become more creative with how you want to look and use the products, they also like the social media world and promote others in the profession when using their brand, which makes the brand even popular.

Overall, I think that Illamasqua is so diverse in the way they present each look. If I where to choose this brand it is like a blank canvas, ready to paint and create another new world for people to find themselves and get lost in.

GIVENCHY

Hubert de Givenchy was born to an aristocratic family in Beauvais, France, on February 21, 1927. After attending art school, he worked for several fashion designers in Paris and then opened his own design house in 1952, he was immediately praised for his chic, feminine designs.

One of Givenchy's most famous affiliates was actress Audrey Hepburn, who wore his designs in Breakfast at Tiffany's and Charade, among other films. Givenchy continued to design for decades, officially retiring in the mid-1990s.

The designs continue to break the boundaries in fashion but continue to stick to tradition in their clean cut clothing.

After selling his business to the luxury conglomerate Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessey in 1988, Givenchy designed for seven more years, retiring and presenting his final collection in 1995. He was succeeded as head designer by enfant terrible John Galliano, with Alexander McQueen and Riccardo Tisci later serving as head designers.

His work has been shown in retrospective exhibitions at theFashion Institute of Technology in New York and the Musée Galliera in Paris, and he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 1996.

Catwalk

Overall, I think that Givenchy has such a diverse collection of images, they are always creative in the way they style the clothing and the makeup is always out of this world also. The seem to always steal the show as they just have such an alternative way in displaying the work.

So which brand to choose, they all are great and all seem to give me ideas for each one. However, the one that I think i will have the most fun with, and really have a diverse and creative out of this world looks for editorial, advertisement and catwalk is Illamasqua. They seem to tick all the boxes for me, empowering women to be creative, having really different advertiment in videos and images. I now need to think how I can channel Illamasqua into my designs and see where they take me.
